The science of Ultra High Def TV: Christmas Lecture

Tuesday 24 November 2015

Family Christmas Lecture 5 December - "Ultra-High Definition Television - the quest for reality" at University of Salford's MediaCityUK campus.

Imagine a TV picture so clear, you feel you could ‘walk through the screen’.

Well it’s already here – and it’s called UHD - Ultra High Definition or 4K, and was very recently used by NASA to show the most spectacular images of Jupiter.

So what is it, how does it work and how come we didn’t think of it before?!

To answer all this and more is Professor Nigel Linge who will be presenting a Christmas Lecture entitled “Ultra-High Definition Television – the quest for reality?” on Saturday, 5th December.

Nigel, who is Professor of Telecommunications at Salford University, will be joined by Wilfred Darlington, lecturer in sound and video technology and Laurence Murphy, lecturer in media technology, also from the University.

Through a series of demonstrations, the engineers will explain and show the potential benefits UHD offers with four times the resolution of our current high definition TVs.

The team will also be showing that the move to ultra-high definition is not all about large screens with a demo of Sony’s Xperia Z5, claimed to be the world’s first 4K smartphone.

The ‘Family Christmas Lecture’ is hosted by the Institute of Telecommunications Professionals (ITP). Attendance is free but there is a requirement to pre-register via the ITP website:  https://www.theitp.org/calendar/event/view?id=516

- In 2014, Professor Linge presented the complete series of ITP Christmas lectures (London, Adastral Park, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow) with a lecture entitled, “Your world in your hand”.

In 2015, Nigel Linge presented two of the ITP Christmas lectures (Birmingham and Manchester) with a lecture entitled, “The web at 25”.
