The University of Salford partnered with Abu Dhabi Men’s College (HCT) and the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) to co-host an aviation lecture.

Experienced aviation expert Dr Thurai Rahulan, of the School of Computing, Science and Engineering who was part of the design team for the Airbus A380, discussed the creation of the Super Jumbo to an audience of students, aviation industry experts and the public.

Dr Rahulan, has over 25 years’ experience working in the aviation field, including looking at flight mechanics, aerodynamics and aircraft design.

The lecture was for students from Abu Dhabi Men’s College (HCT) and engineering students from Etihad Airways, and then in the evening there was an open session which be the first lecture in Abu Dhabi of the RAeS UAE branch.

Dr Thurai Rahulan, of The University of Salford, said: “The Super Jumbo was a unique design challenge. How to get so much weight into the air and keeping it safe and also make sure it was as fuel efficient as possible was a huge undertaking but it is proving to be a very successful aircraft.

“That is what I discussed during my lecture, as well as a history of the development of air transport. It was a huge honour to be linking with Etihad Airways and Royal Aeronautical Society for this lecture series and hopefully it proved a very valuable experience for everyone.”

The University of Salford offers a wide range of aeronautical courses fully accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society and the Intuition of Mechanical Engineers at both undergraduate and taught Masters Level, covering topics such as research, design and development as well as maintenance of civilian and military aircraft. It is aimed at producing graduates with technical and leadership skills, who are ready of a career in the aerospace and other industries.

Salford also offers courses in pilot studies, which offers practical and theoretical training and the opportunity to gain a private pilot licence, Salford students have gone on to have a successful career in the airline business.
