Comic graduates return for Salford Quays show

Tuesday 16 February 2016

COMEDY group Gein’s Family Giftshop return to their Salford roots on Wednesday, February 17 with a ‘must-see’ show, according to the Manchester Evening News.

All graduates of the University of Salford’s Theatre Performance degree course, the troupe present the darkly-comic Trophy Collection, a romp through their ‘shared love of black comedies, serial killers and Walton Ford’.

The new show marks a new turn after a tumultuous two years during which they collected accolades and five-star reviews, including Best New Sketch Act and London’s SketchFest, the curator’s Choice Award at Noise Festival and a nomination for Best Newcomer at the Edinburgh Fringe.

They also began their own BBC Radio 4 series  - Sketchorama – and appeared in Reece Shearsmith’s comedy series Inside No.9. (Shearsmith described them as “exceptionally brilliant” by the way!)

Huge talent

According to Sarah Walters, arts editor of the Manchester Evening News, this Wednesday’s show “will probably become one of those shows 100 people were at but 1,000 pretend they were in years to come.”

She said: “Sometimes your home city grows a talent so huge you know that, one day, they’re going to be among the people who put it on the map.”

The group – Kath Hughes, Ed Easton, James Meehan and writer/producer Kiri Pritchard Mclean met while performing stand-up at Manchester venues while on their Salford course and formed the group shortly after graduating.

Kiri has since joined the staff at the School of Arts & Media as a part-time comedy performance lecturer.

The gig is at The Lowry, Salford Quays – thelowry.com February 17 at 8pm 0843 208 6000.
