Dance students join city centre Chinese New Year procession

Friday 27 January 2017

Dance students from the University of Salford will help Manchester city centre see in the Year Of The Rooster.

The students will join performers from the Travelling Light Circus in a procession through the city centre to mark Chinese New Year this weekend.

The procession, taking place between 11am-1pm and 2-4pm on Friday January 27 and Saturday January 28, will include a large puppet rooster, a stilt walker, a drummer as well as seven performers from the University’s Dance programme.

Whenever they find an open spot and are able to gather a crowd, the dancers, accompanied by the drummer, will burst out into a flashmob style performance combining traditional Chinese dance with parasols and fans, as well as contemporary dance and circus skills.

The partnership came about via visiting dance lecturer Shona Roberts, who also works as a performer and choreographer for Travelling Light Circus.

Lisa Cullen, Dance Programme Leader from the University of Salford, said: “This will be a fantastic opportunity for our students to demonstrate the skills they’ve learned by taking part in a major event in the city’s cultural calendar which is seen by thousands of people.

“It will also give them experience of working with a local circus company which has performed at events across the country. This will be vibrant, colourful and lots of fun and hopefully lead to many more similar projects in the future.”
