Mental health students raise over £700 ahead of 24-hour run

Friday 22 July 2016

Seven Salford Mental Health students are preparing to take part in a gruelling 24-hour run for charity this weekend.

The first-year students will each run a section of the 250km course, and are hoping to raise £1000 for the charity MIND.

The charity run is part of Insomnia 24, a national event taking place in Leicestershire, which will see individuals and teams complete laps around Cattows Farm over a period of 24 hours.

Samantha Prince, 19, is one of the Salford University students who will be running this weekend.

Samantha, from Wigan, said: “I suffered with depression, anxiety and OCD myself and MIND helped me during this time. I wanted to give something back by raising money to help them. We will be camping out over the weekend and are looking forward to it”.

Also taking on the challenge this weekend are Hayleigh Thompson, Oliver Nugent, Mihaela Stancu, Lily-Mae Lomas Kad Bashir, Paul O'Keeffe and Thomas Hughes.

The charitable students are all studying on the highly regarded course Nursing /RN Mental Health BSc (Hons) which is part of the school of Nursing, Midwifery Social Work & Social Sciences.

The group say that they have been training hard to prepare for the run, with some members putting in up to four hours of training every day.

Oliver, 23 from Salford said: “We only had twenty days to put the team together. We didn’t all know each other very well before we started planning for the run, but preparing for it has really helped us all bond. Myself and another team member, Hayleigh did a sponsored walk last weekend up Mount Snowdon, also raising money for MIND”.

The team have already raised £741, and hope to exceed their target. The event takes places on 23 July. You can sponsor them here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/salford4mind
