Prestigious global trade role for Salford academic

Monday 6 February 2017

A University of Salford academic has been given a prestigious role in helping North West companies boost their overseas trade.

Professor Abigail Gregory, Associate Dean Internationalisation for the University’s School of Arts and Media, has been invited to become a North West Export Champion for the Department of International Trade after her work to promote the University abroad was recognised.

The role – given to individuals and organisations with a strong track record of selling overseas – involves sharing her knowledge and experience with North West organisations hoping to export products and services to other countries.

As part of the year-long role Prof Gregory, who has been closely involved in setting up University Partnerships in countries such as Malaysia, China and the United States, will offer advice and support to organisations at events associated with the DTI.

She said: “As we move closer towards Brexit, organisations across the UK who want to realise their export ambitions are understandably feeling nervous about the future, and so I look forward to playing an important role in offering support to organisations wanting to open up new markets – particularly in Asia and North America.

“Here at the University of Salford, our Industry Collaboration Zone (ICZ) programme places industry at the heart of everything we do. This role, therefore, is not just an honour for myself – it recognises the close ties which the University has with a huge range of industries and acknowledges the importance of our work with global partners.”

Prof Gregory was nominated for the role by Philomena Chen, Head of Asia Pacific and the North West International Trade Team at the Department of International Trade.

Philomena said: “I nominated Abigail Gregory because of her dedication and commitment to international trade, offering advice and support to individuals and companies and inspiring the next generation of exporters.

“She has generously given her own valuable time to share some great stories of getting into new markets and inspire the next generation of international success stories."
