Rebecca hits Bali to put Psychology into practice

Monday 24 October 2016

ADVENTUROUS student Rebecca Leeworthy spent the summer helping people with mental health issues – half way around the world, in Bali.

Fulfilling her ambition to travel and be a psychologist, the 20-year-old ran activities in a psychiatric hospital on the holiday island while living with a local Indonesian family.

Rebecca, from Bury, was determined to expand her horizons ahead of her final year on the BSc Psychology degree at the University of Salford.

So she volunteered for the trip-of-a-lifetime which saw her working in the hospital and helping out on therapeutic schemes for children with disabilities and mental health concerns.

Amazing culture

"It's very hard to put the trip into sentences because it was such a good experience. It was amazing getting the chance to work in a mental health hospital and getting a chance to be a part of an amazing culture was incredible,” said Rebecca.

“Today’s psychology students are all too aware that in our multicultural society having a working understanding of global mental health is a huge benefit,” said a spokesperson for SLV Global, which organises volunteering around the world:  The significance of understanding and respecting different cultures can’t be overstated.”

And they say the experience was tough: “As some of the first ever foreigners to work in these facilities, volunteers had to be innovative and creative to ensure that the sessions were meeting expectations.

“The volunteers on this pilot placement pushed themselves and really lived out of their comfort zones for much of the week.”
