Spinal experts gather for Salford masterclass

Surgeons from across the UK and as far afield as Mexico gathered in Salford for a masterclass in improve the standard of care for patients with spinal tumours.

The event, organised by the University of Salford and developed by surgeons from Salford Royal Hospitals NHS Trust, was held at MediaCity Uk on March 1 as part of the Salford Orthopaedic Series.

More than 80 Surgeons and other medical experts from around the world attended the event after a specialist surgical workshop at the Manchester Surgical Simulation Centre.

Experts discussed specialist cases and new surgical approaches, including Rovel Calaco from The Christie Hospital who talked about the new proton beam therapy system he is bringing to the UK after working in the USA.

Irfan Siddique, Honorary Senior Lecturer at Salford University said: “It’s a pleasure to welcome so many of the country’s experts, in particular Stefano Boriani, from the Rizolli Orthopaedic Institute in Bologna, to discuss the management of spinal tumours and evidence for best practice.”

Susan Buttress, Associate Dean International at Salford University’s School of Health Sciences, said: “It has been a real collaboration of industry and education working together to raise the standards of clinical practice in spinal tumour surgery.”

The course was also attended by major companies in spinal surgery who came together to support the two day course.
