Students work with BBC to create new theme for Quays TV News

Monday 19 December 2016

The composer of The One Show's title music has been working with students at the University of Salford to create new opening credits for student news channel, Quays TV News.

David Lowe, who also composed the title music for BBC News, came to the university to listen to pitches from student composers, who each proposed a new theme tune for the student station.

Students from the directorate of music and dance submitted impressive entries, and were given the opportunity to receive expert feedback on their submissions from David.

The top submissions will now be tweaked over the Christmas break, with the new theme tune being decided in the New Year.

The exciting collaboration with the BBC was arranged by Neil Salmon, broadcast team leader from technical services, and Dr Robin Dewhurst, a Reader in Music from the School of Arts and Media.

Neil said: "This is just the sort of collaboration that we should be encouraging and it makes perfect sense for our student composers to be having an opportunity to have their music played alongside the work of our media students - Quays TV is one of many such outlets for this type of work".

BBC Senior Graphics Designer and Salford alumnus James Mobbs also attended the session. He is working closely with Television and Radio student Thomas Foster on designing new graphics for Quays TV News, to accompany the new theme tune.

Thomas said: “We’re making great links across platforms, places and people that are making our news station one of the best academic facilities in the country. We're setting a new standard for student-run news operations”.

Established in 2012, Quays TV News gives students from several different courses within the School of Arts and Media, the opportunity to work together, and use industry-standard facilities to create professional quality TV news bulletins.

Robin Dewhurst said: "It's been so good for our students to be able to work on live briefs such as this and having expert input from industry professionals has been invaluable".

Quays TV News is available to watch online every Tuesday lunchtime from 1.30pm.
