Monday 18 April 2016

SALFORD University swimmer Lucy McKenzie was edged out of a potential Olympic place at the British Swimming Championships in Glasgow (April 12-17).

The 18-year-old, who is a first-year Sport Science student, put in a fine performance to finish 7th in the final of the 400m Individual Medley behind winner Hannah Miley.

She qualified for the final in a time of 4:48.65 and then knocked another second off in the final.

She also competed in the 200m medley and the 400m freestyle at the event, which is used to finalise the Great Britain team for the upcoming Rio Olympics.

The Stockport Metro swimmer has also been training in South Africa while juggling her university studies.

Another University of Salford swimmer Hannah Russell is also building towards a potential Rio place, this time in the Paralympics.

The 19-year-old, also a Sport Science undergraduate, competes for Great Britain at the IPC European Championships in Madeira (April 27 – May 8).
