Three Salford artists’ work on display at Tate Modern

Wednesday 15 June 2016

Art students from the University of Salford have been selected to have their work shown at the newly developed Tate Modern’s opening weekend.

The three artists’ work will be exhibited digitally in the Tate’s Late Futures exhibition, where it can be seen by tens of thousands of visitors in the redeveloped London flagship art gallery.

Meanwhile, one of the artists is also currently having her work displayed at the prestigious Saatchi Gallery.

The work by third year Visual Arts student Valerie Savchits, third year Photography student Helen Burt and second year Fashion Image Making and Styling student Lauren Corless, will be shown on display on TV screens in the gallery’s Turbine Hall from Friday June 17 until Sunday June 19.

Their work is among pieces that were chosen from 100s of submissions by young creatives around the world, who responded to the gallery’s open call for submission, dubbed What Is The Future Of Art?

Printed versions of the artwork have also been displayed at the Uniqlo clothing store on London’s Oxford Street this week, while their work may also be selected to be projected at the Tate Modern on Friday night.

The exhibition is part of a huge opening weekend at the Tate Modern, which has been expanded following a £260mredevelopment project to include a 10 storey high tower, refurbished underground oil tanks for live performances, and a 22ft tree sculpture by the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei.

Another piece by Valerie Savchits is also currently being displayed on digital screens on the second floor of the Saatchi Gallery.

Rosie Miller, Director of Art and Design at the University of Salford, said: “The Tate Modern is the UK’s flagship gallery and this opening weekend will attract thousands of art lovers from around the world, while the Saatchi Gallery is one of the most prestigious galleries inthe country.

“The fact that our students’ work has been selected to be shown at two of London’s leading art galleries demonstrates the remarkable talent that exists here in Salford and the incredibly high standards across our art and design courses.”
