Award winning academic joins University of Salford animation team

AN AWARD winning academic who has straddled the line between art and science has joined the University of Salford as an animation lecturer.
Leeds-based moving image artist Annabeth Robinson has joined the team based next door to broadcasters like the BBC and ITV at MediaCityUK and will lead the University’s animation programme from the 2018/19 academic year.
Annabeth won the 2016 Times Higher Education Award for Outstanding Digit
The project, a collaboration between the Leeds College of Art and the School of Earth and Environment at the University of Leeds, created free open educational resources to enable geology students to create realistic 3D images of the landscapes they were studying.
The project has been used worldwide and has provided alternative assessment for students that cannot take part in field trips.
Annabeth has been involved within the Leeds theatre scene,developing animated backdrops for shows at The West Yorkshire Playhouse and stage@leeds, as well as for The Leodian Concert Orchestra’s performance ofRiders to the Sea by Vaughn Williams staged on Halloween at The Venue.
She has also collaborated with Yorkshire Life Aquatic and Bramley Baths on the Heritage Lottery funded Mermaid Tales immersive theatre project based on memories of swimmers at Leeds’ Edwardian Bathhouse and Dance Hall, and took her work to Delhi as part of YAA DEVI, an Indian Contemporary Dance project by Devika Rao Dance Theatre.
Her research into immersive technologies led her to develop the Zoom Through project for Vespertine #15 and the National Centre For Early Music, which enabled audiences to move through a 360 degree scan of the Medieval St Margaret’s Church in York, shortlisted for the new VR award for Animation category in the recent Manchester Animation Festival.
Annabeth said: “Animation is an exciting and rapidly growing creative industry and I’m thrilled to have joined the team here at MediaCityUK.
“As well as working with some very talented staff and students, I look forward to continuing my research into how cutting edge virtual and mixed reality technology can be used to tell engaging stories.”
