Digital treasure hunt allows youngsters to explore area's history

YOUNGSTERS will be able to find out more about the region’s history while hunting for hidden clues this weekend using a digital treasure hunt.
The University of Salford is teaming up with CBBC for their Summer Social free event, and families will be able to come down to meet stars such as Karim, Lauren, Katie and Rhys who will be broadcasting live from the piazza or take part in a series of fun events inside the University’s own MediaCityUK campus.
Youngsters coming to the event will be able to take part in Hunt Salford – a special treasure hunt created for the event by the University’s digital technology expert Dr Gordon Fletcher.
Parents or carers will be able to access a web page via their smart phones, providing youngsters with an interactive map and allowing them to discover interesting and unusual facts about Salford Quays by searching for hidden markers around the piazza.
Dr Fletcher said: “The game combines digital technology with the traditional museum activity sheet, allowing children to search for hidden markers and answer questions on their phones. It’ll be a fun activity which will enable them to find out more about MediaCity and Salford Quays.”
Other events taking place in the University’s MediaCityUK over the weekend include opportunities for youngsters to use a Laser Cutter, have a go at being a weather forecaster for the day in the University’s own green room, and the ability to create their own comic strip using tablet computers.
The University of Salford event is open from 9am to 5.30pm on Saturday 8th, while the CBBC Summer Social takes place on from 9am to 5.30pm on both Saturday and Sunday. Events are free, though a queuing system may be in place at busier times. Colleagues, students and their families are invited to come along over the weekend and enjoy the activities.
Around 120 Salford and Trafford primary schools pupils are attending the MediaCityUK campus after being specially invited through a partnership between CBBC and Youth Charter on Friday July 7.
