Key charity position for Salford academic

Thursday 4 May 2017

CHARITY Women in Sport has appointed a University of Salford academic to its Board as a Trustee.

The charity aims to increase participation in sport among women and girls. Latest figures show that there is a participation gap of over 1.5 million between male and females, with 21% more males over the age of 16 participating at least once a week in sport and/or exercise than females.

From today Simon Chadwick, Professor of Sports Enterprise at the University of Salford Business School, joins the Board as the Trustee with responsibility for developing the charity’s research and policy aims. His current research focuses on the commercial, managerial and geo-political aspects of sport. In particular, he is actively engaged in research on sponsorship, social media and digital technology, sports brands, fans as customers, soft power and the geo-politics of sport in Asia. He has a strong interest in the sport industry across the world, with an interest in Asian countries including China, India and Qatar.

Simon said: “Women's sport has made dramatic strides in recent years, at the grassroots level, the elite professional level and the space in between. Mass participations events are booming, professional athletes are succeeding at the highest level, and commercial revenues are beginning to grow.

“In this context it is a very exciting time to be taking-on this new role, one which I am greatly looking forward to. I hope to be able to make a strong and positive contribution through research to the success of women's sport. Clearly there remain some challenges ahead, yet through high-quality research I think that together we can effectively begin to address them.”

Sally Hancock, Chair of Women in Sport, said:  "We are really pleased to welcome Simon to the Women in Sport board. We were looking for a trustee with a blend of strong research expertise and relevant knowledge of the sport sector to complement our current trustees.

“Simon brings with him a wealth of experience from his rigorous academic background that will benefit the charity considerably; we look forward to working with him as we continue our mission to transform sport for the benefit of every girl and women in the UK.”
