McLaren boss honoured by University of Salford

THE UNIVERSITY of Salford celebrated a British manufacturing success at graduation this year.

Supercar manufacturer McLaren Automotive has grown global sales by 99% in the past year under its new chief executive Mike Flewitt.

And in recognition of the company’s growing global appeal, Mike was honoured with a Doctorate in Science in recognition of his outstanding leadership.

An alumnus of the University of Salford’s Masters degree in Project Management, Mike is currently overseeing a £1bn plan to transform the company from a niche brand for billionaires into a manufacturer producing 5,000 cars a year.

New models such as 570S and 540C, which retail for less than £150,000, are expected to boost British exports and create highly skilled jobs.

A sister company to McLaren Technology, which owns the F1 team, McLaren Automotive is seen as a potential partner for the University of Salford, with its long-standing teaching and research reputation in engineering, energy and management.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Helen Marshall said: “This year’s awards celebrate our industrial links and partnerships, and Mike Flewitt is a worthy recipient of a 2017 Honorary Degree.

“A graduate of this University, Mike is an arch strategist and problem solver, an outstanding example of how to seamlessly marry engineering and business.

“We are proud of our association with Mike and are delighted he has agreed to accept this honour.”

The University of Salford Honorary Awards 2017 celebrate the strength of its industry relationships which operate via unique student-business partnerships called Industry Collaboration Zones. Other awards were made to executives from Siemens, Facebook and the BBC.

Mike Flewitt received his Hon. Doctorate on Thursday, July 20 at The Lowry, Salford Quays.
