Pharma industry partner honoured for his enterprise

Congratulations to our scientific industry partner Dr Darrin Disley, who has been named as the Barclays male Iconic Entrepreneur of the Year.

Dr Disley, CEO of gene editing world leader Horizon Discovery, is an adviser on Translational Medicine strategy at the School of Environment & Life Sciences and an Honorary Visiting Fellow at the University.

He graduated in Chemistry from Salford in the 1990s.

His company Horizon is close to a market cap of half a billion dollars and on course to become a billion dollar bio business.

As well as being an inspirational leader in the life science field, Dr Disley is also an entrepreneur in his own right and invests and supports a number of leading science &technology start-ups in Cambridge and London.

In 2015 Darrin was awarded a University of Salford Alumni Achievement Award for his work as an entrepreneur and in the biotechnology sector and has attended our alumni events at the House of Commons and given talks to staff and students. 

He explained his warm relationship with Salford during his last visit in January.

The University’s identity is built around its strong collaboration with industry and Dr Disley says that is what drew him to Salford: “When I came to choose between strong chemistry departments, it was clear that Salford had a long history of links with industry in the region, pharmaceutical, industrial;manufacturing.”

- UK Quoted Company Entrepreneur of the Year 2015

- One of the 175 Faces of Chemistry - the Royal Society ofChemistry 2016

- Queens Award for Enterprise Promotion in the 2016 birthdayhonours list in recognition of his contribution to Life Scienceentrepreneurship.
