Plasterer to the Law

A SELF-EMPLOYED plasterer and family-man who decided he wanted a change of career has graduated with a Law Degree from the University of Salford.

Martin Kelly left school without any GCSE’s but after spending time abroad he was inspired to go back to school and study.

And today (Thursday July 20) he graduates in a ceremony at the Lowry, MediaCityUK after achieving a 2:I, and now he is aiming for a new career in the Law.

40 year old Martin, who lives in Prestwich with his wife and two children, said: “It is such a proud day for me and my family. They have been so supportive during all the time I was studying.

“In this country, you can be put in to a box especially if you leave school with no qualifications, but you don’t have to accept that. You can do what you like if you put your mind to it and put in the hard work.”

Martin worked in Iceland as a plasterer and service manager for a few years and got interested in trade union activity while he was there. After a few years representing workers and giving them advice this then inspired him to pursue a career in law.

“I went back to college and got my GCSE’s and A-Levels then came to Salford for my degree.”

LAW CAREER 

Martin is now currently looking for work in the legal sector looking to gain experience. His desire is to go on and pursue a career in law, either as a barrister or solicitor.

“The University gave me so much encouragement and help during my studies. It does make it harder having a family but thanks to the support of the tutors I’ve been able to follow my dreams. I’d say to anyone who is considering going back to study to just do it. It has really boosted my confidence and given me the skills I need to start a new career,” he said.

His tutor Elizabeth Przychodzki, said: “Martin worked really hard on his degree and thoroughly deserves all the success he will now go on to achieve.”
