Robots Playground attracts 7,000 to Museum of Science & Industry

Monday 23 October 2017

POSTGRADUATE students and researchers fired youngsters’ imaginations at the University’s Robots Playground event at the Museum of Science & Industry at the weekend.

More than 500 children learned to programme robots to navigate through a maze courtesy of PhD and MSc students from the Autonomous Systems and Robotics group at the University of Salford.

The fascinated youngsters programmed the Nao robots to talk and dance and had the opportunity to meet the new Salford care robot, Carebot.

The Museum, which organised the Robots Playground for the Manchester Science Festival, reported a total of 7,000 visitors over the two days.

Experience

Researchers Hassanin, Alaa, Roy, Ipek, Hakim, Mae, Stefania, Saber, Lisa and Deepak led many of the sessions supported by senior academics Dr Theo Theodoridis, Dr Steve Davis and Professor Samia Nefti-Meziani.

Steve said: “We were thrilled to get a space at MoSI itself which is the main venue for Manchester Science Festival, England’s most popular science festival.

“It’s great experience for all the team getting involved with the public and showing off some of the amazing science and engineering behind bots.”
