Salford 'best place in UK for graduates'

Monday 11 September 2017

With 5,000 ‘Freshers’ headed to the University of Salford this month, the city along with neighbouring Manchester is laying claim to being the best place in the UK for graduates.

Job growth in the media, digital, science and the financial sectors are proving extremely attractive to the growing number of graduates who are finding brilliant opportunities to work and stay.

The creation of MediaCity UK - where Salford is the only university to have a base - helped bring thousands of roles to around 200 digital, media and creative companies. And this is only set to increase with its £1bn expansion scheme over the next ten years, which will create 1,400 new homes and hundreds of jobs.

The BBC recently announced that 200 more digital jobs will also be moving north.

Digital and tech boom

Katie Gallagher, managing director at Manchester Digital, told the Manchester Evening News: “Manchester/Salford, and the tech scene in particular, are booming. The last couple of years have seen the region really solidify its status as a leading digital and tech centre in the UK.

“Those studying a digital or tech related subject have a wealth of excellent opportunities on their doorstep.

“Over 86 per cent of the companies in our membership recruit their tech talent from local universities, and over a quarter of them provide specialist graduate schemes.”

The majority of graduates actually find work in small companies, and TechNation recently reported that between 2011 and 2015 the city saw 898 start-up companies.

Creative and media

The£10m Space Studios development in West Gorton, which has been used to film award winning ‘The A Word’ and ITV hit drama Cold Feet, has been an example of this.

With the biggest UK creative and tech centre outside of the capital the region has an enviable track record in the delivery of high-end drama production in the UK. Over the last 5 years with 1 in 4 dramas shot outside London shooting in Manchester.

Already employing more than 250 people, bosses at Space announced a new £14m expansion which will increase the number of employees by just under 300.The University of Salford recently reported that 92.1% of Salford graduates are in work or further study, again an increase on last year.  Go here to find out more about Postgraduate opportunities this autumn..
