Salford strengthens China links

Friday 27 October 2017

THE UNIVERSITY of Salford has grown its Chinese links with the renewing and strengthening of two agreements in the country.

The partnerships, with a government ministry training centre and a university, will lead to collaborations in research and teaching programmes for students across the University of Salford as well as research and training possibilities for staff.

Professor David Spicer, Dean of the Business School at Salford, visited Beijing on behalf of the University to sign the deals. During his visit, Professor Spicer renewed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with The China Training Centre, Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security. This will increase collaborations and will involve all schools across the University, who will be invited to provide bespoke training programmes, exchange programmes, and engage in joint research projects with our Chinese partners.

Professor Spicer also visited the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE), the leading business management school in China, where he signed another MOU. Both parties discussed collaborations in UG and PG programmes, the exchange of staff and student programmes, and discussed the scope of future activities.

Professor Spicer said: “This is great news for the University. These links are of increasing importance as China continues to grow in stature around the world. They will give our staff some great opportunities to work in collaboration and take on some interesting new projects. And our students will also benefit as through the exchange programmes as they have the chance to learn about China and develop career skills that will be vitally important in the coming years.”

Dr Jia Liu, who leads the two projects and is a reader in finance from the Business School, said: “Salford University is excited to see the renewal of the MOU with the China Training Centre. This partnership has already delivered a number of benefits, including joint workshops, bespoke training programmes, and mutually beneficial visits between the two parties. We now look forward to building on the foundations of the new and expanded MoU from 2017 onwards.

“The China Training Centre is the largest governmental training organiser and provider for civil servants in the country, as well as for technicians and professionals across public and private sectors in China. I believe that the renewal of the MOU provides huge potential for further collaboration in CPD provision and research, much of which maps extremely well on to our Industrial Collaboration Zone agenda and also provides the University with a significant international dimension.”

Dr Liu added: “We are also delighted to be working with the UIBE in developing joint programmes in various areas. We hope that, based on the foundation of this new MOU, and through co-ordinating efforts across Salford Business School in developing academic programmes, we will be able to develop a strategic partnership with leading universities in China and promote Salford in China's educational market over many years to come.”
