Wednesday 4 January 2017

The first black president of the University of Salford students union, and two sabbatical officers, have been recognised for their ‘excellent leadership’ at the Global African Students Education Summit (GASES).

Ceewhy Ochoga, who is president of the University of Salford students union, attended the education summit as a representative of the University of Salford.

Jelili Mustapha, the Science and Technology Officer, and Adeyinka Adebayo, the Arts and Media officer, also represented the University at the event.

GASES, which was held as part of Black History Month, provided a unique platform of meeting and engagement for African students both in the United Kingdom and across the globe.

The event was set up by the GASES team led by the CEO Amara Kanu, the wife of former Nigerian and Arsenal footballer Nwankwo Kanu.

The event recognised the achievements of 38 African student’s that are currently Presidents and Vice-Presidents of students unions in Britain.

Ceewhy, who officially began her role as President of the University of Salford student’s union in July 2016, said: “I am privileged to have received this award. It is really nice to think that as an African woman I gained the trust of my peers to become president of Salford student’s union”.

“Since I took up the role, I have certainly noticed that more African and international students have been getting involved in things like volunteering, and putting themselves forward for roles within the University.  For an African student to see me in a position of leadership, it gives them the motivation to get involved more in their University. Personally, that is very important to me”.
