Shock radio scoop national awards at Student Radio Conference

Friday 21 April 2017

SALFORD'S student radio station Shock Radio scooped two prizes at the I Love Student Radio awards last night.

The station picked up the prize for Best Training initiative early on in the evening, for taking part in alumni talks, Media Factory and North West SRA training days.

The success didn’t stop there, and the team found themselves back on stage at the event, which this year was held at De Montfort University, to collect the award for being the Most Improved student radio station.

The I Love Student Radio awards are part of the Student Radio Association Conference, an annual event which sees radio stars of the future rub shoulders with big names in the industry, including Radio 1 presenter Greg James and LBC journalist James O’Brian.

Amongst the students who attended the awards last night were Shock’s station manager, Sam Morris, Rachel Williams, Shock secretary and presenter Benedict Jones.

Rachel, who is a final year Broadcast Journalism student, said: “It was amazing to win the two awards last night. Shock opens up so many opportunities for students trying to get into the industry through the SRA. But most of all it's  fun  and  one  of the best societies at Salford- completely student led. We’re at day three of the student radio conference, and we’re having the best time. We’ve attended so many talks from people who are at the top of their game in the industry. We’ve learnt so much about presenting,  getting  in  to  the industry and networking”.

Two years ago, Shock Radio underwent a large makeover, moving from the Adelphi building in to a new purpose built facility in the heart of the University of Salford’s student union building.

Debra Prinselaar, TV and Radio programme leader, said: “This is a brilliant achievement for Shock Radio, and these students thoroughly deserve their success.  Shock Radio is made up of a team of dedicated students,  who  work  very  hard outside of their set lectures, to deliver a quality student radio service, that continues to thrive as Manchester’s largest student station.”

Shock Radio has been the training ground for several of today’s top industry players, including alumni Louis Chadwick, who is a producer on The Asian Network, Sophie Yates, who is a presenter on XS Manchester and Megan Stumm, a producer at Key 103.

Shock Radio carry out several fundraisers each year for good causes locally. In 2014, the team set the world record for the longest radio show. The team managed to complete a mammoth 85 hour long broadcast on Monday the 14th of April 2014. The record was previously  held  by  Radio  legend Chris Moyles, who set the record in 2011. Shock's success led to them raising over £2500 for The Christie.

Next week, Shock Radio will be holding another fundraiser for The Christie, which will be a 24 hour jailbreak.
