Social media education needed

Thursday 26 October 2017

NADINE Munro, Lecturer in People Management at the University of Salford Business School, says workers need education on the implications of social media posts, in the wake of Jared O’Mara being suspended from the Labour party.

Nadine said: “Jared O’Mara is another high profile example of people falling foul of a murky digital footprint. Comments made on forums ages ago are coming back to haunt him. There is nothing which can excuse comments of such a nature, and this story may well have uncovered personal views his constituents would want to be made aware of.

“There is however a question about the permanency of social media and online commentary which shouldn’t be ignored. The ubiquity of social media platforms in everyday life including comments made on online forums necessitate action. Targeted education of younger generations who live their lives in the blurred boundaries between the on and offline worlds mean in the future they are vulnerable to these very issues.

“Nobody is calling for those in the public domain to be ‘beige’ in their online presence, however we need to remember this is the age of the digital wild west, and some personal online reputation management is required.”
