A FIRST year student has won an award for her documentary for a children’s heart unit that looks to close.

Journalism student, Ellie Kemp won the Nottingham Post’s “Bright Young Thing” Award after making her documentary, “Living with Congenital Heart Disease” to support the Congenital Heart Centre at Glenfield Hospital in Leicester as NHS England proposes to close the unit.

Ellie, who started at Salford in September, was born with a hole in her heart and was regularly receiving care from the unit and staff from a young age.

She said: “It felt amazing to be recognised for my documentary - especially as the subject is so close to my heart."

On receiving the award Ellie said: “I felt really nervous when my category was being announced, and I was so surprised to have won because there was such tough competition in my category.

“The events evening was so exciting - there were so many inspiring people with incredible stories there.”
