Businessman recognised for charity work

A BUSINESSMAN has been honoured by the University of Salford for his charitable work at a ceremony at the Lowry, Salford Quays.
David Medlock, now trustee of the Medlock Charitable Trust, was born and raised in Bath before moving to study Environmental Health at The University of Salford in the 1970s.
After graduating he worked for Tameside Borough Council, serving the Borough as an Environmental Health Officer. While based in Manchester he was involved with Shelter, a charity that campaigns to end homelessness and his other charity work includes efforts to improve adult literacy.
He also met his wife Jacky while studying at Salford and they have worked together on many philanthropic projects.
“That is why I was so keen to give something back and I’m proud to have been able to do that.”
In 1979 he changed careers and joined the family engineering design firm in Bath, The Hebron and Medlock Group. The company was started by his father Len in 1951 and is now known as Sitec Ltd, a leading engineering design business which at its peak employed over 1200 staff.
This was sold by the family in January 2019. Two charitable trusts set up using the proceeds have contributed over £40 million to various good causes throughout the country and abroad, as well as in Salford.
On receiving an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Salford School of Health and Society, he said: “It is a real privilege to have this recognition from a University that has been such an important part of my life.
“If I had one piece of advice for those graduating today I would say you get out of life what you put in. That is true of all things in life, so if you want a successful career then you have to be prepared to work for it.”
