Care leaver awarded for university work

A CRIMINOLOGY student received the “High Achievement in Education” Award after leaving care and joining the University of Salford.
Danny Haughton, 21, had been in care since the age of nine and despite an unsettled start to life, always knew he wanted to go to university.
Danny won the award at the Tameside Looked After Children Awards, which looks to celebrate the educational, sporting or artistic achievements of children who are in care and care leavers in Tameside.
Danny, who’s in his final year of his Criminology course, said: “It really was an honour to be recognised for being at Salford University and getting to my final year.
“It was really nice to attend the event and was really great to see people who are in care and have been in care to be recognised for doing well.”
Despite only 6% of care leavers going on to university, Danny always planned on attending university.
“I always knew I wanted to go to university since I first went into care. I always enjoyed going school and knew I wanted to go all the way into Higher Education.
“I have become proud to be a care leaver during my time at university and I have also decided to write my dissertation based on care leavers and I will be able to draw on some of my experiences of foster care to enhance this.
“I am also in the process of being a ‘care experienced mentor’ to a looked after child in the local area as I would like to work with children in the care system and help out in any way that I can.”
