Child cancer lab student 'over moon' with prize

Wednesday 24 October 2018

UNDERGRADUATE Anna Borun’s outstanding scholarship has earned her the 2018 Microbiology Society Prize.

“Today I found out I won the Microbiology Society Prize. Over-the-moon is an understatement I am absolutely excited and thrilled,” she tweeted.

And so she should be as her efforts not only earned her free membership of the Society but a prized placement in the University of Salford’s child cancer laboratories*, where she is undertaking experiments on cancer cells under Dr David Greensmith.

The third-year Human Biology & Infectious Diseases student is originally from Poland and had to complete an access course at Manchester College to win her place at University.

'Fabulous'

The Microbiology Society judged her second year work to be truly excellent and worthy of the prize, notably “a fabulous lab report” in which she compared two biofilms to examine if they were "mutually cooperative or antagonistic”.

The 36-year-old mum thanked her tutor Dr Chloe James, with who she most recently worked on the MicrobiHOme exhibition at Manchester Science Festival.

Chloe said: “Anna is dedicated and a pleasure to teach as she is always smiling, fully engaged and hungry for knowledge.”

The Microbiology Society is one of the largest microbiology societies in Europe with a worldwide membership based in universities, industry, hospitals, research institutes and schools.
