Comedy and musicals collide as hit show comes to University of Salford

Wednesday 21 February 2018

THE WORLDS of comedy and musical theatre will collide as a smash hit show comes to the University of Salford for one night only.

Big comedy names will perform their favourite songs from musicals and films when the sell-out Amusical show comes to the University’s New Adelphi Theatre on March 5 as part of its national tour.

The show will feature Ashton-born Brennan Reece, who won English Comedian Of The Year and is currently known as the narrator of ITV’s Survival of the Fittest but has also appeared on shows including Skins and Life As I Know It.

Actor Dean Fagan, better known as Coronation Street’s Luke Britton, will perform a duet with Edward Easton, known for Inside No 9, We The Jury and Porters, while comedians Kate McCabe, Lou Conran and Harriet Dyer will form a super girl group.

Big names to be announced

Other big names appearing at the event will be announced over the next few weeks.

The show is brought to Salford by Jayde Adams, who won the 2014 Funny Women award and appeared on panel shows such as Channel 4’s 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown, along with Kiri Pritchard-Mclean, who writes for sketch group Gein’s Family Giftshop, appeared on The Russell Howard Hour and has taught on the University’s own Comedy Writing And Performance programme.

Stars appearing in the show will perform their favourite songs from musicals and films – accompanied by in-house band Dave And the Quavers – and the audience has to vote on who’s best.

Some fabulous names have already been confirmed and we have another guest who’s so special we’re not even allowed to give you a name yet!

Kiri Prichard-Mclean said: “This one off extravaganza promises to be the talk of the town, featuring some of the finest comedians on the circuit belting out the biggest hits from stage and screen, and more sequins than you can shake a stick at. Some fabulous names have already been confirmed and we have another guest who’s so special we’re not even allowed to give you a name yet!

“If you love comedy, musicals and comedians almost certainly getting horribly drunk to cope with the nerves of singing in front of a live audience, then come along and get those jazz hands at the ready.”

Major arts venue for region

The New Adelphi, which opened in 2016 as the new home of the University’s arts and media programmes, is fast becoming a major arts venue for the region, with upcoming shows including Suspiciously Cheap Comedy, which has previously featured acts including Daniel Kitson and Sara Pascoe, and new projects by the contemporary Hawk Dance Theatre group.
