Exhibition looks at life in Brexit Britain

WITH just over six months to go until Brexit, a new exhibition explores what these uncertain times mean for people living in Britain.
Island Life, opening in Paradise Works in Salford on September 7, features work by six recent graduates reflecting on the complexities of modern life in Britain and on our relationship with our European neighbours.
The artists involved are all graduates from the University of Salford’s Visual Arts, Creative Music Technology, Photography and Graphic Design BA programmes who have all benefited from the University’s graduate scholarship programme – which supports artists in their crucial first year after graduation.
Lubna Ali, who has taken part in a six-month residency at The Whitworth Art Gallery, uses fine art prints which incorporate Islamic geometry and minimalism to explore her identity as a British Muslim.
Madrid-born Claudia Alonso, who has had her work exhibited at Manchester Museum, engages with Brexit using newspaper headlines and images from the 2016 British referendum.
Tara Collette, based at Islington Mill in Salford, creates banners and works on paper highlight the free labour ‘opportunities’ that artists and designers are often offered, instead of payment for their work.
Elliott Flanagan – the co-founder of artist led collaborative Nightshift International – has created video work to study of contemporary masculinity using archival and original footage.
Photographer Jamal Jameel, whose work has been shown on public buildings around Greater Manchester, has worked closely with the city’s refugee and asylum seeker community, creating photographic prints revealing the powerful human stories behind the headlines and statistics.
Fuchsia Summerfield, who has worked with Manchester International Festival and HOME Manchester, creates sound recordings to explore the altered states of consciousness that deals with addiction.
Island Life runs at Paradise Works, East Philip Street, Salford, from September 7-16. A public preview will be held from 6-9pm on September 6.
