Environment & Life Sciences earns bronze Athena SWAN Award

THE SCHOOL of Environment and Life Sciences has received a Bronze Athena SWAN Award for supporting the career progression of its female academics.
This accolade is a welcome addition to Salford’s existing institutional and departmental Athena Swan Awards is another step towards our ambition to be a beacon of good practice in gender equality.
Dr Rachel Brenchley, who led the application, said: "I am thrilled that we have been successful. This award recognises our efforts to achieve gender equality within our School community and we are committed to delivering on our action plan to prepare for the Silver award."
Dean of School Professor Sheila Pankhurst said:"I couldn’t be more delighted and proud about the Athena SWAN Bronze award for ELS. For me, this is about more than gender equality. It is also about addressing all aspects of possible inequality in the workplace, including ethnicity, class and disability.”
Athena SWAN’s Charter of good practice covers processes and actions in relation to women’s progression, representation and working environment.
Meet two women recently promoted in the School.
Niroshini Nirmalan - Professor of Molecular Bioscience
Promoted to Professor in 2017, Dr Niroshini Nirmalan gained her MBBS Bachelor of Medicine at the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka before earning an MSc in Molecular Parasitology and a PhD in Molecular immunology at the University of Salford.
Niroshini, a key member of the biomedical Research Centre was employed in 2010 as a Senior lecturer and earned herself a Chair in Molecular Biomedicine in August 2017. She specialises in antimalarial research and runs an innovative study into biomarkers for trauma survival in partnership with the Manchester Royal Infirmary, Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Manchester.
She will deliver her inaugural Professorial Lecture The Enigma of the ‘Jesuit Powder’ (Quinine) on Friday, 18 May at 6pm in the Chapman Building, University of Salford.
Federica Sotgia – Professor of Biomedical Science
Promoted to Professor in 2017, Dr Federica Sotgia obtained her postgraduate degree in Medical Genetics from the University of Genova and has held posts at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, the Kimmer Cancer Centre, Philadelphia and the University of Manchester before joining the University of Salford at a Reader.
Her teaching is linked to her research interests in cancer, cancer metabolism, biochemistry and drug discovery.
Federica Sotgia is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a member of the editorial board of the American Journal of Pathology.
