First ever female announcer for Rochdale AFC

Monday 8 April 2019

A TRAILBLAZING graduate has made history by becoming the first ever female Rochdale AFC announcer.

Laura Beth, who graduated with a first-class degree from the University of Salford in 2018, has taken her place as one of only four women to announce in the English Football League.

Standing in for regular announcer Dave Sweetmore, whom she produces a show for on Revolution 96.2FM, Laura Beth said she felt slightly nervous for her first game, on 23rd March. However, she did a fantastic job announcing on the three-one victory against Scunthorpe United.

Laura Beth said: “Dave told me I’d be fine as long as I got the goal scorers’ names right, which I managed to do. It was an amazing experience, especially knowing that my mum and dad actually met at a Rochdale AFC match!”

Since finishing her BA TV and Radio degree, Laura Beth has presented on a variety of podcasts and stations, including BBC Radio Manchester and Revolution 96.2FM.

She added: “I have wanted to work in radio ever since I was 14, and I have been gaining experience since the age of 17.”

When Laura Beth first heard about the University of Salford’s course, she knew this was a great opportunity to help achieve her dreams: “As soon as the TV and Radio course was launched, I knew it was the one I wanted to do. We were asked to choose five potential universities, in college, but I just wanted to go to Salford. I was thrilled when I received an unconditional offer.

All the lecturers on the course have worked in the industry, and they still offer support even now that I have graduated,” she said.

Laura Beth added that she loves radio because it combines two of her favourite things: music and talking.

Although she is more accustomed to interviewing bands, such as Stereophonics, she is interested to see what opportunities football announcing may bring in the future.

Radio Lecturer at the University of Salford, Jimmy Ewing, said: “Laura’s success is a fantastic example of what a determined young woman can do if you’re willing to work hard.”

When giving advice, Laura Beth stressed the importance of work experience: “Even though it can seem daunting, it’s so important to just go and do it. Don’t be afraid to ask people and build networks around your interests.”
