First students arrive at British University of Bahrain

A NEW university has just opened its doors in the gulf state of Bahrain which will provide students with key skills the country needs to develop.
The institution is a partnership between The British University Bahrain (BUB) and the University of Salford and offers degrees in Business, Engineering and IT. Government and employers have identified skill shortages in the country and region and the courses have been designed to fill those gaps and are aimed at contributing to growth in the national and regional economy.
As the first students enjoy the state of the art facilities, with a British feel, Professor Helen Marshall, Vice Chancellor at the University of Salford officially opened the site and welcomed the first cohort.
Professor Marshall, said: “I’m proud to be here at the very start of the British University of Bahrain. This partnership will open doors and offer so many opportunities for our students.
“The educational experience that the University of Salford can provide is first class, and working closely with the Government and business in the design of the courses will ensure that our graduates leave us with the best chance of developing a successful career and contributing to the development of the Gulf region.”
British University Bahrain (BUB) will deliver a range of undergraduate degree programmes on a brand new campus, offering courses such as BScs in Marketing, Accounting and Finance, Property and Real Estate, Civil Engineering, Software Engineering and many more.
A key element of the partnership will be the creation of an environment that enables businesses to engage with faculty staff and students on live projects, providing value both to industry and to students. Space will be provided to support start-up businesses and social enterprises.
It is part of the University of Salford’s aim to grow its international reach, enabling it to meet the needs of an ever changing higher education landscape both at home and abroad. This new partnership solidifies Salford’s position as a truly international university which aims to closely serve the needs of industry and drive the development of best practice in learning.
Professor Keith Sharp, Vice-President of the British University Bahrain, said: “It is fantastic to see the first wave of students enjoying our incredible new facilities.
“We will offer exactly the same standard of education and expertise as Salford students in the UK enjoy. Working with industry is key in how we see our mission.”
