'Full employment' for first Nursing Associate graduates

Thursday 10 January 2019

THE FIRST-EVER cohort of new Nursing Associates (NAs) will sign up to the Nursing & Midwifery Council register on January 28, after graduating from the University of Salford.

51 graduates celebrated the completion of the two-year training programme at an event attended by Jean Hayles, Deputy Lead Nurse for the North of England (Health Education England) and Natasha Dare from the NMC.

Salford is among the first training Universities to offer the foundation degree – FdSc Nursing Associate - as a Higher Apprenticeship.

Hear what our graduates had to say about the course in this short video.

New role

The Nursing Associate is a new support role that will sit alongside existing healthcare support workers and fully-qualified registered nurses to deliver hands-on, tailored care for people of all ages.

Professor Margaret Rowe, Dean of Health & Society at the University of Salford said: “Nursing Associates will address a skills gap between health care assistants and registered nurses, whilst also ensuring the NHS has more flexibility, capacity and capability to meet future healthcare needs.  We see it too as a stepping stone to graduate level nursing."

Congratulations from the team @SalfordUni to all our new Nursing Associates! Blazing a trail! Well done! #nursingassociates #becomeunstoppable #patientcentredcare         #nursing pic.twitter.com/5YtmL2iUXQ

Health Education England (HEE) oversees the nationwide pilot programme, which is delivered via both foundation degrees and apprenticeship schemes.

All secure jobs

Dr Janine Archer, programme leader, said: “It has been exciting to see our students develop their skills and confidence.

“Our programme is truly hands-on, with students working in local hospitals throughout their training. And they enjoyed a significant element of simulation training to enhance their clinical skills, using our world-class facilities.

“I am delighted to say that all our first Nursing Associates have successfully secured jobs in Foundation Trusts across Greater Manchester."

The Government has planned 2,000 training places for NAs in the pilot with 7,500 starting in 2019.
