Future of British comedy talent on display in Edinburgh

Thursday 26 July 2018

STUDENTS and graduates from the university that produced comics such as Peter Kay and Jason Manford are set to showcase their work at the Edinburgh Fringe.

The cream of the crop from the University of Salford will present stand-up, sketches and more over 10 nights at the Comedy From Salford Uni night at the Espionage venue.

The event will see performances from recent graduate James Allen, who made it to the finals of this year’s Chortle Student Comedy Awards – and who may go on to be chosen as overall winner later in August at the Edinburgh Festival – and Jack Gleadow, who took second place in the competition last year.

There will also be work by current students as well as guest slots from successful alumni such as multi award winning James Meehan, a member of the Gein’s Family Giftshop group, as well as Tom Short and Sean Mason, who regularly perform with improv troupe ComedySportz.

Many of the graduates and students performing at the event come from the University’s degree in Comedy Writing and Performance – the first of its kind in the country.

The University set up the first Stand Up Comedy module to be taught in higher education in England in 1992, teaching students about everything from farce and improvisation to using comedy as a political tool, and going on to produce such names as Peter Kay, Jason Manford and Steve Edge.

The show, running from August 2-11, is part of the Laughing Horse Comedy event – itself part of the Free Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Ashlee Cox, Project Coordinator from the University of Salford said: “The University of Salford has a long history of producing incredibly talented comedians and the cream of the crop will be on display at this event. If you’re up in Edinburgh in August and you want to get a glimpse of the future of British comedy, this is the place to go.”
