LA internship after fashion designer's Levi's win

Wednesday 29 August 2018

A FASHION student from the University of Salford will pitch her fashion designs to Levi Strauss after beating competitors in a prestigious international competition.

C’era Wolffe is one of only two young designers from 500 globally chosen through the Levi Strauss X Arts Thread Design contest, landing herself a summer internship at the brand’s San Francisco headquarters.

And it makes two wins in a row for Salford fashion students after Val Kristopher Galbo won the competition last year.

Competitors were tasked with redesigning the Levi’s Engineered Jeans, and speaking to American media, C’era explained that she found her inspiration for the competition from street dancers.

“I developed the design from breakdancers. I elongated the running shorts so that the ankles were curved. I did a bit of patching. I paired them with over-sized jackets, panelling, colourful prints and vinyl printing of records that were playing at that time.”

C’era, who specialises in menswear and pattern designs, join a student from New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology to take part in a ten-week summer internship at Levi Strauss under the guidance of Jonathan Cheun, the Senior Vice President of Design.

She started working on her entry last October, and spent two months perfecting the design before submission in December. After making it through to the final eight entries, she then had to take part in a Skype interview with Mr Cheun.

Salford fashion department is rated 4th in the UK out of 49 universities and colleges by The Guardian Education.
