DR BEN Williams, Lecturer in Politics and Political Theory, comments as Theresa May announces her impending resignation.
Dr Williams said: “Theresa May’s announced resignation as Prime Minister is hardly unexpected after recent intense speculation about her position, but it generates an even greater level of uncertainty in British politics.
“Now the race begins for her successor with Boris Johnson the early front-runner. However, as has so often been the case in past Conservative Party leadership contests, it is often the lesser-known candidate who emerges victorious. Based on the timetable the Conservative Party hierarchy has devised, we should know who May’s successor is by mid-July, and this will be the second time in three years that the new occupant of 10 Downing Street will enter without a general election beforehand.
