MP lectures students on employment law: “Brexit will change everything”

MEMBER of Parliament Rebecca Long-Bailey left the opposition benches behind to spend time lecturing Law students at the University of Salford.
The MP for Salford and Eccles, and Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, has a previous career as a solicitor. The lecture was open to all students from the Business School.
She spoke to the students about how politics influences employment law and about her own early career as a solicitor, where she specialised in commercial law, commercial property and worked on NHS contracts and estates.
As part of the lecture she discussed the problems of insecure employment and how it impacts on workers lives, before taking questions from the students.
Before the lecture, Long-Bailey, who was born in Old Trafford, said: “When working on the NHS contracts and speaking to people in the organisation I started to get angry about the way it was being treated by the Government and that inspired me to enter politics.
“Brexit will be huge for all these students, it will change everything and will impact on all our lives.
“Hopefully I can inspire some of the students here today. All our laws are shaped by politicians so it’s important they understand the process and how laws are made and how the political process influences that.”
Law lecturer Lizzy Przychodzki organised the visit. She said: “Many thanks to Rebecca for coming along today, the students got a lot out of the session. It was good to hear from someone who has a hands on real world view of the industry, some real experience of practising the law.
“It is important for them to understand the process as well as how a career in the law can develop once they get into the world of work.”
