Property executive Claire Handby awarded honorary degree

PROPERTY, infrastructure and construction executive Claire Handby has been awarded an Honorary Degree in Business Administration by the University of Salford.

A director at Deloitte,Claire has made a major contribution to promoting women in construction, across all sectors involving capital spend and is a well-known promoter of Salford’s,Greater Manchester and the UK’s regeneration plans.

The Oldham-born graduate in BSc (Hons) Construction Management was conferred the honour at the University’s Graduation Ceremony for the School of the Built Environment at The Lowry on Thursday, July 19, 2018.

As a key member of Deloitte Financial Advisory Services Practice, Claire leads Regional Real Estate - Capital Projects, based out of Manchester.

Visiting Professor

Claire is a role model who has been nominated for multiple awards over the years; from winning‘Student of the year’ during her Construction Management Degree 1997, the Rising Star Award with Mace Group 2002, a Management Consultancy Award (MCA) winner in 2014, Deloitte North West Europe ‘Impact Award’ winner and Deloitte UK Financial Advisory ‘Impact Award’ 2018 winner. She has been nominated for the Northern Power Woman ‘Person with Purpose’ Award and an International Women’s Day Award ‘Ground Breaker and Outstanding Mentor.’

She has held previous roles at EY in their Consulting Practice delivering multi-billion and million pound capital programme and project transformations, at Mace Group, Laing O'Rourke Group, Laing Management Ltd and McCarthy & Stone (Dev) Ltd.  

Claire is a Chartered Project Management Professional (MAPM) and Chartered Construction Manager (MCIOB). She has recently been made a Visiting Professor at the University of Salford to share her insight with others and help them grow.

Career inspiration

Claire said: “I am incredibly thankful and humbled to receive this Honorary Doctorate Degree from the University of Salford, which is such a renowned university globally in the field of the Built Environment.

“To receive this is an honour and reflects the journey we have been on together to support inclusive growth for all. I hope this can continue to inspire the next generation on their personal career journeys, and I am thankful to have the opportunity to demonstrate what can be achieved with the right attitude and ambition."
