Radio 4 Controller to appear at Nations And Regions Media Conference

Wednesday 11 April 2018

THE CONTROLLER of BBC Radio 4 will discuss what the station is doing to reach wider audiences at this month’s Nations And Regions Media Conference.

The event, held at the University of Salford’s MediaCityUK campus on Thursday April 19, will see Gwyneth Williams talk about how Radio 4, which attracted a record number of listeners last year, has a continuing role as the place for quality news, current affairs, documentary, arts, drama, debate and comedy.

Radio 4 is also now attracting digital audiences with podcasts such as conspiracy thriller Tracks, Friday Night Comedy and Political Thinking with Nick Robinson.

Reflecting UK diversity

Gwyneth Williams will be in conversation with the BBC’s former media correspondent Torin Douglas during the session, which will also cover the station’s role in reflecting the rich diversity of communities across the UK.

The conference will feature sessions on everything from radio comedy to children’s audio and science broadcasting.

Other sessions will feature BBC 5 Live presenter Sam Walker looking at the future of audio downloads and streaming, Trevor Dann presenting a special edition of the Radio Today Programme, and Dr Hermione Cockburn discussing how radio can help bring scientific concepts to a wider audience.

Other panels will feature Derry Girls actors Diona Doherty looking at groundbreaking Northern Irish comedy, and celebrate success of women in radio, while the event will culminate with ITV’s Lucy Meacock presenting the first ever Ray Fitzwalter Award for the best investigative journalism outside of London.

Fascinating time for radio

Nations and Regions Media Conference Director Beth Hewitt said: “This is a fascinating time for radio and we’re delighted to be able to welcome Gwyneth Williams – one of the most important figures in the radio industry today – to discuss where the largest speech network in the UK is heading.”
