Red Devils takeover

Friday 1 March 2019

SALFORD Red Devils and the University came together last night, as students staged a takeover of the club.

Shock Radio broadcast live music before kick-off and did commentary of the game against St Helens as over 150 students and staff packed the AJ Bell stadium.

Among them were many who had never been to a game of rugby before. On the coach to the game Ilaria Romeo, Architecture, student said: “We’ll be there to support them, hopefully they will win. Its my first game so I’m excited to see what it will be like.”

Longer term as part of the relationship a member of the Salford Business School will sit on the club’s board, and the University is now a kit sponsor, with the logo adorning the teams shorts.

The university and the club have already worked together on projects such as Fan Fit, which involves fans of the Red Devils signing up to the fitness app and competing with each other for prizes for who ever does the most exercise each month. The latest monthly winner was presented with a season ticket and short before the game.

Jennifer Hinsley, Operations Manager at the University of Salford Business School, said: “The Red Devils are a real community club, and the University is keen to work closely with our local community so this is a great fit. We will be looking to strengthen ties between the two organisations in the future. It fits in perfectly with our ICZ agenda, helping students get involved with the community.

“It’s been a great event tonight, we have had loads of interest from students and staff as you can see from the ticket sales and the atmosphere has been great. We are definitely stronger together.”

The whole event was organised by Faizan Ahmed, a placement year student studying Business Management with Sport. He said: “It’s great to see so many students here tonight. We went well passed our target for student numbers so form that point of view it has been a great success.”
