Royal Television Society awards winners

BROADCASTERS of the future scooped FIVE prizes at the Royal Television Society Awards.
The prestigious RTS Awards, held at the Lowry Theatre, recognise the best audio-visual work created by undergraduates and postgraduates in the region.
Out of nine categories, students at the University of Salford took home five awards in Animation, Journalism and Broadcast Media.
The winners were:
- Jennifer Smith – Best News Piece – ‘A testing choice for Down’s Syndrome’
- Samuel Hawkley – Best Short-Form Piece – ‘Perception’
- Josh Davies – Best Edit – ‘Solace’
- Ellie Lightwoler – Best Comedy & Entertainment – ‘Darryl Meets ..’
- Sean Jones, Cheryl Parker & Maria-Laris Covaciu - Best Animation - 'Making a Meal of It'
Beth Hewitt, Director of Broadcast Media, said: “To swoop five awards speaks volumes about the high quality of work that students from our programmes are producing. The winners are all fantastic ambassadors for the University and I’m sure will all go on to do great things in the industry.”
Lyndon Saunders, lecturer in BA TV and radio and a former producer for BBC and ITV said: The work of our students this year is of stunning quality - ‘broadcastable’ as the judges’ stated. What is most pleasing is how each film worked on story, content and production values simultaneously, meaning both them and their work are industry-ready. We’re very proud of their achievements.”
Creative and digital media programmes at the University of Salford are renowned for their co-creation with industry, such as the BBC and Workerbee and non-media organisations like Manchester united FC and Salford Red Devils.
