'Salford Four' lead industry collaborations

Directors appointed to ICZs
A TEAM of experts in university-industry partnerships have been brought in by the University of Salford.
The quartet will drive Salford’s central strategy on Industry Collaboration Zones (ICZs) increasing the impact of research and innovation and helping graduates into work.
The four zones: sport, health, digital & creative, and engineering & environments, will strengthen the co-creation of courses with industry, focus university expertise on knowledge transfer to business, and make Salford more responsive to regional agendas and skill shortages.
Among the objectives are to increase work and industrial placements, create more ‘real world’ projects for students to make graduates more employable. The four are:
- Caitriona O’Shea, Chief Executive of The Royal Air Force Sports Federation, and former CEO of Scottish Gymnastics, is named director of the sport ICZ.
- Mike Brown, former Director of Mainstream Engineering Global Academic Programmes at Siemens, will head the engineering & environments ICZ.
- Robin Bargar, former Dean of School (Media Arts), Columbia College, Chicago , is leading on digital and creative, and
- Andrew Spencer, former Head of Knowledge Exchange & Commercialisation at Rothamsted Research, is the director for the health, well being & society zone.
Professor Richard Stephenson, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, said: “Our whole strategy centres on a university that delivers the best outcomes for industry and for students. The new Industry Collaboration team will be pivotal in driving this forward.”

The University of Salford’s Energy House has been involved in the launch of a campaign driven by Smart Energy GB and the Energy Saving Trust promoting national energy efficiency initiatives.
