Salford grads win at the Soap Awards

HOLLYOAKS stars and graduates of the University of Salford receive top awards at the British Soap Awards.
Haiesha Mistry, 24, who plays Yasmine Maalik and Ross Adams, who plays Scott Drinkwell in Hollyoaks both received awards at the evening that recognises the industry's best.
Haiesha starred in a story line that won ‘Best Single Episode’ for the episode “Three Mothers, Three Daughters”, which aired last October and focused on self-harming.
Ross, who graduated from the University in 2005 after studying Performance Drama & Theatre, won Best Male Dramatic Performance for his portrayal of his character's suicide attempt.
Haeisha, completed a Higher National Diploma in Performance and Media in June 2013 and then went on to receive a 2:1 in Performance Drama & Theatre and graduated from the University of Salford in June 2015.
In the episode, Yasmine writes an article about her friend Lily’s self-harming in order to win an internship at a newspaper. This leads to their teacher bringing the two girls and their friend, Peri’s mothers together in order to find out who the article is about.
The show was in strong competition for the award, trumping Coronation Street, EastEnders Emmerdale and Doctors.
Dr Richard Talbot, Senior Lecturer in Performance said: “Haiesha was a delight to teach, she was full of energy and enthusiasm for her course and she strived to do her very best in every module.
“She made a big contribution to the School of Arts & Media's engagement with external organisations through her role in the young people's theatre group at the Royal Exchange Theatre.
“She also bravely took on a solo performance at the Imperial War Museum, interacting with the public as a nurse in a bold Immersive Museum Theatre piece directed by Carran Waterfield.
“We were chuffed when she landed a role in Hollyoaks and we are really proud to see her reap the rewards of her hard work at the British Soap Awards this year.”
Hollyoaks, created by legendary producer Phil Redmond, has launched countless showbiz careers for young actors including Nathalie Emmanuel, Max Brown, James Corden and Salford alumni Warren Brown.
