Salford Graduate lands trip of a lifetime with Manchester City

A UNIVERSITY of Salford graduate landed her dream job at Manchester City and travelled to the USA reporting on their successes.
Abigail Withey, a Broadcast Journalism graduate, went on the clubs preseason tour to America as the football clubs Media Content Intern.
Since she graduated in 2017 with a First Class Honours, Abigail has gone from strength to strength in a range of roles, from being a freelance football writer, to Manchester United’s match day social media reporter. When the opportunity to become Manchester City’s Media Content Intern last October, she knew the role was made for her.
The 22 year old said:“Just a few weeks after starting at United, I saw the job come up at City and knew it was perfect for me. My lecturer, Martin Hamer, also contacted me to let me know about the job so I knew I had to go for it. After two interviews, I started just a couple of weeks later!”
In the 10 months that she’s been in the role, she’s used the skills she developed on her Broadcast Journalism course to produce content for ManCity.com, broadcast live commentaries on the Manchester City social media accounts, presenting for CityTV and even interviewing some of the biggest football stars in the world!
Broadcast Journalism lecturer at the University of Salford, Paul Broster, said:
"We are very proud that so many of our great graduates are getting great jobs. Abigail won awards with us on the the journalism course and she's already making her mark in the industry at a very high level."
On top of this, she was selected to travel and work on the USA tour as the content lead for the women’s team, visiting Portland for a training camp, and then jetting off to Miami for the Women’s International Champions Cup.
As the content lead, it was her responsibility to arrange appearances with players throughout the trip, interview the team for match previews and do live social media commentary from the games at the Hard Rock Stadium.
As well as working with the women’s team, there was also the opportunity to meet the men’s team and create collaboration content for Manchester City.
Abigail, from Norfolk, said:
“It was such an incredible opportunity for me and definitely not one I would have expected to take part in at the beginning of my internship. It was all so busy and very full on, but it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.
“I grew up in a tiny village so there weren’t many opportunities for me to branch out into the field I wanted to go into back at home. My school didn’t teach journalism so I never had the opportunity to explore it as much as I wanted to.
“What I did know was that I loved English and Drama and had a real love for sports. When I was younger, my friend and I used to pretend to be newsreaders and would put together and record our own news stories- so it always stuck in my mind that I would want to go into that field.”
Abigail is now working hard to secure a full time role at the club when her internship ends in October.
