Salford health courses praised in student satisfaction survey

Monday 13 August 2018

MIDWIVES and occupational therapists are among the health professions to have painted a rosy picture of the University of Salford – giving their courses 100% in a recent survey.

Students who have just graduated from the University’s three year Midwifery degree gave the maximum possible score in the National Student Survey (NSS) conducted earlier this year.

Another group of students, on the post RN Midwifery programme for those who want to develop their skills while already working for NHS trusts, returned scores of 95% – well above the national average for the subject of 82%.

Those studying Occupational Therapy part time gave 100% satisfaction rates, while students on the full time course returned 95% - both well above the national average.

Students on the Integrated Practice degree – incorporating social work and learning disability nursing qualifications – gave 95% satisfaction rates, against a national average of 82%.

Physiotherapy scored 96% - above the national average of 86% - while podiatry scored 93% - above the national average of 83%.

Simulation suite

Students training to work as midwives, nurses or allied health professionals at the University benefit from a state of the art simulation suite enabling them to experience and learn practical skills in as realistic a setting as possible.

It features rooms designed to look exactly like hospital wards and contains realistic human patient simulators – high-tech electronic manikins operated by specialist technicians from an adjoining control room.

Other courses getting a thumbs-up in the NSS included Criminology and Sociology, at 100% against a national average of 84%, and Psychology and Counselling Studies, at 95% above an average of 84%.

Radiography scored 90% above a national average of 84% while Prosthetics and Orthotics scored 86% above a national average of 84%.

Overall the University's scores improved to last year to more than 84% of students 'satisfied' with their course, compared to a national average of 83%.

These NSS scores show once again that for anyone who wants to join the health professions, Salford is one of the best places in the UK to study

Margaret Rowe, Dean of the University of Salford’s School of Health and Society, said: “Students studying on these programmes consistently praise the simulation suites for testing their skills and giving them a genuine feeling of what it’s like to work in a healthcare environment.

“There was also a lot of warm feedback about the support they had received from our teaching staff, many of whom have decades of experience working in the NHS.

“These NSS scores show once again that for anyone who wants to join the health professions, Salford is one of the best places in the UK to study.”
