Salford student impresses as makeup artist for Jamie Lawson video

A UNIVERSITY of Salford student secured the chance to work on a top ten artist’s music video.
When Cydney Beasley, a University of Salford Media Makeup for Fashion student, was asked to be one of the makeup artists for Jamie Lawson’s next big video, she knew the answer was a definite yes.
As the first artist signed to Ed Sheeran’s record label, Gingerbread Man Records, Lawson has already proved popular, with his hit ‘I wasn’t expecting that’ reaching number six in the UK Singles Chart in 2015.
When asked to contribute her skillset to the video for the singer-songwriter’s new single, ‘The Answer’, Cydney jumped at the chance. She was responsible for the hair and makeup of the extras, who are featured bouncing on space hoppers in the upbeat music video.
Cydney said: “I really enjoyed doing the hair and makeup on the 30 supporting artists. I loved working on set for the video and gained a wonderful testimonial as a result.
“On the Media Makeup for Fashion course, we are expected to gain over 40 hours of experience across different genres for a module called Work Based Placement, so I emailed Alexandra Blythe Jackson, the main Hair and Media Makeup Artist on the shoot.”
This was a valuable opportunity for Cydney to work with an expert in her field, as Alexandra has worked on a series of high-profile projects, such Eaten by Lions and the BAFTA and Oscar nominated Mary Queen of Scots.
Cydney can now add ‘The Answer’ to her already impressive portfolio, which includes the likes of Qhotels, 24 Seven Lifestyle Magazine, Boss Model Management, Missguided Curve, and a model-led tourism destination film in Italy. She has also recently been featured in The British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology Magazine.
Although she was offered a place by all her chosen universities, Cydney decided upon the foundation degree at Salford due to its practical nature and strong links with industry. She said: “The course offered more of a fashion focus, which is the area I want to get into eventually.”
Cydney plans to continue her studies at Salford, intending to pursue a full degree in Media Makeup-Artistry, which she hopes will help her achieve her dream of becoming a makeup director, specialising in fashion and lifestyle.
“I find correction makeup so interesting. People often underestimate how much skill it takes to make somebody look natural; it really is an artform.”
It would seem Cydney’s career is on an upward trajectory, as she recently discovered she is a finalist in the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology National Awards for makeup artist of the year competition.
Her tutor, Anna Turner, added: “Cydney has just completed her first year of study on the FdA Media Makeup for Fashion programme and has settled into Manchester city life well. We hope she continues to grow as an artist.”
