Sexual equality photographs earn Heather first Vogue exhibition

A GRADUATE from the University of Salford has been recognised by Vogue for ‘Embracing Diversity’ in her photography.
Heather Glazzard had her work put forward to a judging panel featuring huge names such as Giorgio Armani in the Vogue Italia Festival.
The theme of the 2018 festival is ‘Embracing Diversity’, the main theme of 24-year-old Heather's visual art.
The Vogue exhibition in Milan will feature work from Heather’s Queer Letters project which focuses on the stories and struggles of a minority. The photograph is of friend Cara Looij, juxtaposed with her 'coming out' story.
On the inspiration behind the series, Heather, who is from Leeds, said: “When you’re pushed to the bottom of the pile in society because of sexuality, it becomes the main focus of your work to promote.
“I didn't really find my creative voice until I was 18. But my dad was a photographer too, he had a dark room in the pantry with loads of cameras but I was never good at taking pictures until recently, I think I get my influence of creatively from growing up with that.
After graduating from the Fashion Image Making and Styling course in July, Heather wants to fight for people who are a minority in the future.

She added “I’d love to shoot for brands that have a similar vision for the LGBT+community and magazines.”
Push boundaries
“The support I received at Salford University was insane. My lecturers taught me to believe in what I wanted to say in a creative form, they also taught me to push boundaries. I can’t thank them enough.”
Christine Ratcliff, Programme Leader for Fashion Image Making and Styling at the University of Salford, said: “Our vision is to encourage students to see the subject as a vehicle to question, challenge and engage with wider socio-cultural issues and themes.
"Heather is an exceptional talent who really grasped the opportunities available to her. Over her journey with us, she was able to develop a radical contemporary philosophy on sexuality and the power of being vulnerable alongside a progressive visual aesthetic.
"Telling her personal story and the stories of others, Heather (pictured below) has been able cut through an over-saturated visual culture to create beautiful images with the power to change hearts and minds.”
