Sports CEO MBA launched

Wednesday 27 June 2018

SPORTING leaders of the future will be created thanks to a new MBA programme produced by training provider VSI Executive Education and taught by the University of Salford.

The course, CEO of a Sports Organisation, starting this September, will provides leaders with the knowledge, understanding and skills to succeed in one of the most demanding positions in the sports industry.

Designed for elite athletes and leaders with aspirations to be chief executives in the world of sport, the CEO programme will help transition those with sporting experience and others with leadership ambitions into the highest roles, by marrying their experiences of competitive sport with an educational understanding in business.

Managing huge financial growth, increasing corporate governance responsibilities and the demands of challenging stakeholders, chief executives need advanced skills and knowledge to succeed in this challenging but immensely exciting industry.

Tony Faulkner of VSI said: “We have responded to market demand with this new programme. Sport and academia have for some time had a distant relationship, how academia translates into application in the real world has been questioned by sport and correctly so.

“At VSI our vision is to deliver programmes at Executive level that enhance knowledge but critically lead to improved performance. We know what the sport industry needs and we know how this need to look, feel and be delivered.

“Our industry partnership with the University of Salford enables this partnership to be bold and inspirational to pioneer tomorrow’s leaders in sport. An example of this is through VSI’s relationship with the PFA. The PFA support their members across a range of academic programmes and are very keen to see more of their members move into senior executive roles within football.“

Olympians Kelly Sotherton, Goldie Sayers and Beth Tweddle, England cricketer Matthew Hoggard and PFA Chairman Ben Purkiss are a part of the current VSI MSc in Sports Directorship, currently running in partnership with Salford. Senior people from across elite sport and commercial business are set to join the programme this year.
Professor Chris Brady, Director of Centre for Sports Business at The University of Salford and academic lead for the programme said: “I have spent years interviewing sporting leaders and they have always complained that there is no “school for CEO’s”.

Having spoken to leaders from major corporations, sporting organisations and even military leaders it became clear that is a huge gap in the market.
“Leaders are often thrust into the role without any preparation and this course will help with that preparation.”
