Student podcasts empower young creatives

SALFORD student Ben Ovington and graduates Calvin Lanz and Fuchsia Summerfield have been working with Intern, the platform which champions youth creativity, with the launch of the podcast series ‘The Ladder’.
The trio teamed up with Intern to create an investigative series that unpicks some of the issues facing young people entering the creative industries.
MA Music student Ben, who produced the podcast aspires to be an Audio Technician after graduating. He said: “The skills I have gained on my course have given me freelance opportunities such as producing for Intern which is brilliant.”
The first topic up for dissection, suggested by Intern chief Alec Dudson, is the gender pay gap and the charge that women are less likely to land design jobs than men.
Alec said: “I know this is a complex and important issue, which needs to be well-researched, so we began the podcasts as the perfect vehicle to explore it.”
Excelled
Producers Fuchsia, Calvin and Ben have worked with Alec on everything from field recordings and studio sessions to the edit, sound tracking and mastering of the tracks. All three are or were students of Simon Connor at the University of Salford, whose early-stage support of The Ladder was vital in getting the project off the ground.
Simon said: “All three have excelled; recording interviews out in the field; editing and mixing audio; and composing musical cues for the podcast to a professional and broadcastable standard. They have shown professionalism throughout and developed a great working relationship with Alec and the Intern team.”
Future episodes plan to cover themes like mentorship, the importance of failure and the experience dilemma, with a full first series pencilled in for the summer of 2019.
