Student wins two national awards for film

A TV and Radio student has won two awards at The Moving Image Awards for his short film.
First year student Elliot Collier, 18, won ‘Best Short Film’ and managed to take home ‘2017 Overall Winner’ at The Moving Image Awards, which is in partnership with the British Film Institute (BFI) and recognises work by talented young film-makers.
Elliot’s film, titled ‘The Last Reel’ was shortlisted for ‘Short Film’ award and was created as part of his time studying at Newcastle-under-Lyme College before joining the University of Salford in September.
The film, which was inspired by Elliot’s time studying Film Noir whilst at college, features an unnamed man, who is stopped on his way to work and given a ticket which will admit him to “the ultimate journey of a lifetime.”
Humbling
Elliot said: “The awards evening was a brilliant experience, travelling down to the prestigious BFI Southbank and being able to watch my film on the big screen with my family was incredible and very humbling.
“The quality of the other films in the competition was so high, I really didn't expect to win; I was pleased just to be shortlisted in the first place.
Lost for words
On scooping two awards on the night Elliot said: “I was shocked when my name was announced for the 'Best Short Film' category and then to win '2017 Overall Winner' was a real shock.
“Luckily, I didn't have to give a speech, as I was lost for words.
"Winning these awards is really going to help with my CV and I am so lucky to be able to build on these skills at the University of Salford, where my first semester has been a really eye-opening experience, giving me further insight into an industry I hope one day to make a career in.
"The fact that many of my lecturers have experience of working in this sector means the quality of the teaching is excellent.
Programme Leader of the BA (Hons) TV and Radio (BATAR) course, Debra Prinselaar said: "We on the BATAR team are delighted for Elliot. To win a national film award is outstanding – two be awarded TWO, is a real coup.
"Elliot has set the bar high for his future work"
